Cave conservation project – delayed till 2024

Loading Events
delayed till next year in May sometime.
Some years ago, the OHDG discovered several geologically remarkable and highly fragile caves. We’ve been working with the Forest to get proper management and protection for them. In the future, a trustee program is anticipated to allow grotto visitation to the caves in very controlled and responsible way. These fantastic and highly fragile caves will be gated and preserved.
The Forest Service is asking for assistance on a joint cave conservation project with OHDG on 10/24 and 10/25. This is in a remote location. The hiking is rugged and loose lava. Expected hike is 6 miles round trip with heavy packs to carry needed equipment. There will likely be an opportunity to visit some unique and restricted access caves on this trip.
If the grottos can offer at least a few volunteers each day, that would be ideal.
I plan on attending the 24th for sure. A high clearance vehicle is needed to get to the site. I can offer rides to volunteers departing the Country Store at Knott Rd and Hwy 97 at 7AM sharp on the 24th.There is a dirt lot behind the store we can leave vehicles at. I likely can not do the 25th, so if someone with a 4×4 can step up to do that day and take folks in, that would be great.
Bring your biggest pack, horizontal cave gear, food and water. Please RSVP by PM to me. Call or PM me with questions.
Thanks,
Neil Marchington, Chair, OHDG
